Louis Vuitton’s Pre-Fall 2024 collection made a significant impact in Shanghai, setting the stage for what promises to be a series of ‘Louis Vuitton Voyager Shows.’ These shows are designed to reimagine the Maison’s traditional destination fashion showcases, bringing them to new and exciting locations around the world. The Long Museum West Bund served as the backdrop for this special event, where Louis Vuitton’s Artistic Director, Nicolas Ghesquière, joined forces with Beijing-based artist Sun Yitian to create an enchanting fashion journey.
The collaboration with Sun Yitian brought a fresh and unique flair to the collection. Known for her vibrant paintings that often feature mass-produced objects and cartoon-like animals, Sun Yitian’s artistic style seamlessly translated into the world of fashion. Her influence was evident in the collection, with her words encapsulating the spirit of the collaboration: “When my artworks are translated into clothing, bags, or perfumes, they become much closer to people, and this interaction is lively and unpredictable.”
The Pre-Fall 2024 collection was a blend of two distinct creative visions. Sun Yitian’s playful, animal-printed designs were prominently featured, creating a vivid spectacle on the runway. Models descended a sleek black staircase, bringing the space to life with bursts of print and color. Following closely behind the animal-themed ensembles were Ghesquière’s signature futuristic silhouettes, showcasing an eclectic mix of floral prints, stripes, and textures, alongside more minimal, monochromatic looks.
Accessories played a pivotal role in the collection, with leather bags commanding attention. The Side Trunk, a staple in Ghesquière’s designs since its debut in the Cruise 2023 collection, appeared in various sizes and colorways. Reinterpretations of iconic Louis Vuitton bags, such as the GO-14, Capucines, and Atlantis, were also featured, each emerging in new proportions and shades, including black, beige, pastel yellow, and baby pink. The Monogram, a signature of Louis Vuitton, was showcased in all-black or adorned with Sun Yitian’s playful animal artwork, adding a whimsical touch to the classic design.
At the forefront of the show was the imaginative collaboration between Sun Yitian and Louis Vuitton. Her cartoon animal art was beautifully integrated into Louis Vuitton’s classic designs, set to be released alongside the Pre-Fall 2024 collection. From a leopard-head-shaped wallet on chain to the Boite Chapeau featuring a sad Dalmatian motif, Yitian’s signature style was unmistakable. Even the Side Trunk received a delightful animal treatment, as Yitian brought her vibrant animal characters to life on the timeless Monogram canvas, adding a charming twist to the classics.
